FROM GROUNDED TO GALACTIC : A Colour Trend Forecast For 2025

2025 is defined by a rich interplay of colours that reflect our evolving lifestyle and technological landscape. The 2025 colour forecast is carefully researched by drawing influence from socio-economic shifts, technological innovations, and cultural currents, to predict the palettes that will dominate design. From fashion runways to art galleries, concert stage design to interior design and product marketing to logos and graphics, colors in 2025 will reflect a dual desire for comforting familiarity and imaginative escapism.

Pantone and WGSN : A Tale of Two Trends

Colour trends either ride with the tides of the world, or go the opposing direction in order to balance out the acceleration. In this case, our exponential technological breakthrough in need of a grounding force, manifests itself into the comforting ‘Mocha Mousse’ — Pantone’s Colour of the Year 2025 (PANTONE 17-1230) — A warm, chocolate brown evoking the sense of cocoa and coffee, described as sophisticated, grounded and lush, symbolizing harmony between modern demands and nature’s timeless beauty.

WGSN chose to go a different direction, predicting their Colour of the Year 2025 as ‘Future Dusk’ (Coloro 129-35-18), a deep blue- violet hue, carrying a sense of mystery and escapism. A little more futuristic, AI and metaverse coded, blurring the boundaries between physical and virtual realities. Where Mocha Mousse directs the consciousness towards nature, stability and authenticity; Future Dusk is more functional and versatile, directly delving into the revolution taking place right now.

Psychological Impact and Cultural Reflection

Colour psychology is an reflection of socioeconomic and cultural factors that materialize and trickle into our lives, symbolizing a collective shift in consciousness. Here are some of the current cultural themes causing this shift.

  • Post Pandemic need for Comfort and Natural Connection : there is a global craving for comfort, stability, and tangibility, driving the return of warm, organic tones that feel more inviting, hospitable and nurturing — Earthy hues like browns, soft greens, and mellow ochres promote wellness. This theme also manifests into intimate dinner parties, a decline in party culture and newer ways to connect and socialise like cafe raves, festivals and pop ups.
  • Technology, AI and the Metaverse : the relentless advance of technology – AI, AR/VR and space travel – is coloring our world in new ways. Futuristic and “otherworldly” hues are on the rise. As digital experiences deepen, we see more of neon brights, glitchy iridescents, and deep cosmic tones in design. Think vibrant purples, sharp white, electric blues and pink-tinged magentas lighting up everything from user interface design to concert stages – reflecting our collective flirtation with virtual worlds.
  • Cultural Nostalgia & Retro Revival : a gradual depart from hyper-saturated Y2K nostalgia and advancement towards deeper historical references in 2025’s style; muted, earthy shades that feel more time- worn like muddier pink, dark browns, beige and terracotta red. Think art deco, the 1970’s, folklore.
  • Bright Individualism and Play : the celebration of personal exploration and optimism, we’re seeing the power of ‘play’ with consumers moving away from one-size-fits-all palettes to hues that ‘help tell a personal story’ with unexpected playful colours alongside safe neutrals. The Barbie pink moment of 2023 opened the door for people to embrace playfulness; in 2025 that translates into other candied tones – juicy purples, pops of coral, and citrusy yellows – used in moderation to liven up spaces and outfits.
  • Global Connectivity and Pop Culture : Because of social media, color movements in 2025 are truly global – we see cross-pollination of influences East and West, North and South. Regional color preferences are converging.  Brat green, cherry red, butter yellow. A consensus to the world becoming more flat - starting with the creators, moving to the industry.

The Duality of 2025

As we look ahead, the colors of 2025 not only forecast a trend but also narrate a story of our times, marked by the confluence of tradition and innovation. These colors are more than just aesthetic choices; they are emotional cues that guide us in redefining the spaces we live in and the ways we express our identities. From the clothes we wear to the rooms we inhabit, each color choice we make is a reflection of our individual journeys and the collective path we are charting in a rapidly evolving world. So, as we step into the flow of 2025, let's paint it with intention, always remembering that in the kaleidoscope of life, every color has a place and significance.
